Disentangling quark and gluon jets with normalizing flows

چکیده
The isolation of pure samples quark and gluon jets is key interest at hadron colliders. Recent work has employed topic modeling to disentangle the underlying distributions in mixed obtained from experiments. However, current implementations do not scale high-dimensional observables as they rely on binning data. In this we introduce TopicFlow, a method based normalizing flows learn jet datasets. These networks are performant histogram-based approach, but since unbinned, efficient even high dimension. models can also be oversampled alleviate statistical limitations histograms. As an example use case, demonstrate how our improve calibration accuracy classifier. Finally, discuss flow likelihoods used perform outlier-robust quark/gluon classification.

Probing quark gluon plasma with jets.
We study multiple scatterings of jets on constituents of quark gluon plasma and introduce energy–energy correlations to quantify their effects. The effects from a longitudinally expanding plasma on medium as well as high energy jets are found to be significant at both RHIC and LHC energies. Because jets escape from the plasma long before the completion of mixed phase, these effects are free fro...
متن کاملProperties of Gluon and Quark Jets
Recent developments and results on the comparison of gluon to quark jets are discussed. A most important topic is the introduction of explicit energy scales of the jets. The scaling violation of the fragmentation function and the increase of the multiplicity with scale is shown to be directly proportional to the corresponding gluon or quark colour factor. The ratio of the hadron multiplicity in...

Representing the SLD collaboration We present measurements of identified charged hadron production over a wide momentum range using the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. In addition to studying particle production in flavor-inclusive Z 0 decays, we compare the production in decays into light, c and b flavor events. We also examine particle production in gluon jets with that in light quark je...
متن کاملEnergy and Virtuality Scale Dependence in Quark and Gluon Jets
We discuss some important issues concerning multiplicities in quark and gluon jets in ee annihilation. In QCD the properties of a jet in general depend on two scales, the energy and virtuality of the jet. Frequently theoretical predictions apply to a situation where these scales coincide, while for experimental data they are often different. Thus an analysis to extract e.g. the asymptotic multi...
متن کاملEvolution of Average Multiplicities of Quark and Gluon Jets
The energy evolution of average multiplicities of quark and gluon jets is studied in perturbative QCD. Higher order (3NLO) terms in the perturbative expansion of equations for the generating functions are found. First and second derivatives of average multiplicities are calculated. The mean multiplicity of gluon jets is larger than that of quark jets and evolves more rapidly with energy. It is ...
